Tech Squad

Introduction

Do you love working with computers? Do you enjoy solving problems and fixing things? Join the KCMS Tech Squad  for the 2019 Fall semester. You and a group of 15 innovative students will work together to learn about computer components, programming, and robotics. You will also help to solve technology issues throughout Ken Caryl Middle School during the school day. No computer experience is necessary, but a passion for technology and learning new things is required. Mr. Reinig, our district technologist, will help guide the Tech Squad through the world of Information Technology support with real world applications. All submissions are due to Ms. Nickoloff before the end of the year.

Objectives

The Tech Squad will engage in hands-on instructional activities that provides them with real world experience in technology hardware, software, coding, and robotics. The Tech Squad will then utilize this new learning in a leadership capacity as they collaboratively work to solve problems and provide support for technology issues at Ken Caryl Middle School.

Structure

The Tech Squad will meet every Wednesday during Advisement. At this time, students will learn new technology skills from a district technologist and work as a collaborative team to solve technology problems throughout our school. Additionally, the Tech Squad will be Library TAs for one of their electives periods. During this TA time, Tech Squad students will be solving technology issues throughout the building independently.  They will also be engaging in Tech Squad coursework, including Lego Mindstorm and Raspberry Pi’s, throughout the semester.

If a student is unable to be a Library TA, but still hopes to be in the Tech Squad during Advisement time, exceptions have been made in special circumstances.  Please see Ms. Nickoloff if this applies to you.

Application

There are three components to the Tech Squad application.  You must fill out an application, obtain a parent signature, and have one KCMS staff member complete a recommendation form.  If a larger number of students apply, an interview may be required. 8th grade students will be considered first for the 15 coveted Tech Squad slots.  All submissions are due to Ms. Nickoloff before the end of the year.
