We are excited to introduce the 2020 ‘Friendship’ Summer Reading Program for Ken Caryl Middle School. The purpose of our ‘Friendship’ Summer Reading program is to utilize literature to promote connection to one another. Through reading, we aim to foster an inclusive community focused on friendship, connection, and compassion.

Our objectives of the summer reading program are as follows:

To increase rigor and higher-level reading for all students;
To give students a choice in what they read;
To prevent summer reading regression by keeping our students engaged in literacy activities;
To promote kindness and empathy by engaging in books centered on that theme.

Over the summer, all KCMS students are required to read one book from the ‘Friendship’ summer reading list and record it in a reading log, to be turned into their English Language Arts teacher. Families unable to print out the reading log may complete a log on a separate piece of paper. Please read this Summer Reading Document for further information. If you have questions about these requirements, please contact Emilie Nickoloff, our digital teacher librarian (

For more summer reading opportunities, please visit the Jeffco Public Library Summer Reading Website. Register, log reading hours, win prizes, and participate in events. While this is not a KCMS requirement, it is highly encouraged (and lots of fun for the whole family).

Enjoy reading over the summer!
