Dear Columbine Articulation Area Families,

Over the course of the last 3-5 years, we have seen an increase for the need of technology in our classrooms to support a 21st century learning experience that prepares all students for future success. While this is an exciting time in education, it requires us as educators to think differently about how we’re delivering instruction to students. Our society is changing faster than our schools; this pushes us to think about how we prepare our students for jobs that don’t yet exist.

As a district, we’ve spent a lot of time this year engaging in conversations around the Jeffco Generations vision. With learning at the epicenter of everything we do, teachers are required to transform the student experience through a rich integration of critical thinking and educational technology at every level.

For the 2017-2018 school year, Columbine High School went to a 1:1 (one device for each student), using a Blended Learning model for their 9th and 10th grade classes. Blended Learning/1:1 combines in-person instruction and educational technology to offer a more personalized and customized learning opportunity, as well as allows students to engage in challenging, real-world tasks. With this transition, each 9th and 10th grade student was issued a Chromebook, paid for through student fees.

In the 2018-2019 school year, all Columbine Articulation Area 7th-11th grade students will receive a new district managed Chromebook at the beginning of the year if they did not receive one in the 2017-2018 school year. A school technology fee between $200-$210 (pending district pricing) will be implemented for each student receiving a Chromebook. Middle school students will be able to take their device with them to high school, but will be required to upgrade their device in 3-5 years after purchase (average Chromebook lifespan).

Columbine Articulation Area elementary schools are also considering adopting a Blended Learning/1:1 instructional model in the near future. The plan at this time is for elementary 5th graders to purchase these beginning in the 2019-20 school year.

We wanted to inform you early about this learning initiative, the pending distribution of Chromebooks, and the related $200-$210 fee as you start to plan for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. Additional information will be shared as we launch an exciting new school year. Thank you for your ongoing support as we prepare students for a successful future.
